Canada Welcomes TOEFL Essentials

Canada Welcomes TOEFL Essentials: A New and Friendly English Test Option for Immigration

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has taken a significant step forward in broadening language test options for permanent economic immigration. Effective soon, applicants will be able to submit TOEFL Essentials—a modern, shorter, and more accessible English-language test—alongside the existing options. This update marks a win for fairness, flexibility, and your Canadian dream.

What’s Changing?

  • IRCC will start accepting TOEFL Essentials scores for economic immigration applications—including Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), Atlantic Immigration Program, and more. While the official start date is pending, IRCC is preparing to integrate this test into its approved list.

  • ETS (Educational Testing Service), the creator of TOEFL, confirmed its designation as an approved provider for this test. The test isn’t accepted yet—but it's coming soon.

What Is TOEFL Essentials?

  • Designed for real-world communication—it assesses listening, reading, writing, and speaking through practical, task-based activities.

  • Shorter format: approximately 90 minutes, compared to longer alternatives.

  • Fast scoring: you get unofficial results for listening and reading immediately; official scores arrive within about 6 days.

  • Wide availability: offered at secure test centers globally, including Canada.

Why It Matters—For You!

More Choice & Convenience
You’ll no longer be limited to IELTS, CELPIP, or PTE. TOEFL Essentials brings flexibility—especially for applicants in regions with limited test access or those who prefer a shorter, more modern format.

Potential Cost Savings
Experts anticipate that TOEFL Essentials will pressure existing language tests to compete on pricing—making the process more affordable.

Aligned with Immigration Goals
With Canada aiming to welcome skilled workers in sectors like healthcare, technology, and trades under its 2025–2027 Immigration Levels Plan, this update aligns with national priorities and improves application ease.

Final Thoughts

The inclusion of TOEFL Essentials in IRCC’s accepted language tests represents a meaningful shift toward accessibility and applicant-centered policy. Whether you’re a skilled worker, student, or aspiring permanent resident, this update promises a more flexible path to achieving your Canadian immigration goals.

Stay tuned for the official rollout announcement. In the meantime, planning  ahead and understanding your options is key to keeping your application on track—efficiently and confidently.
