Navratri 2019: Nine-day long festival begins with great fervor on the first day

The festival is popularly and prominently celebrated in Gujarat, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Karnataka.

Navratri in Sanskrit means nine nights in which nine forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped in a particular order. Alongside observing fast and performing various rituals, preparing a special offering for each day holds symbolic significance.

The occasion is believed to mark Goddess Durga's victory over demon Mahishasura, which signifies the victory of good over evil.

This year, Navratri is being observed from September 29 to October 7.

Happy Navratri to you and your family!

Is the Value of Educational Credentials Changing!

The first year after the great recession of 2010, a prevalent narrative floating around was that the value of college degree was rapidly waning. This was attributed to the massive open online courses (MOOCs) popularity. Business theorist Clayton Christensen forecasted that half of all colleges would be in bankruptcy within 15 years. Others said the degree was “doomed.”

Degrees - 23Sep19 - pixabay.jpg

A national survey of employers at the Northeastern University however displayed that Human Resources leaders said that the value of educational credentials in hiring has either increased (48%) or held steady (29%) over the last five years. This ascertains the significance that the traditional degree today is very much relevant in the job market. However, we see that traditional institutions have been partnering with technology firms to delivery learning.

The continuous technological innovation in the delivery of educational credentials has been increasing access to and has created a wide-ranging new option for talent development and corporate training.

In a survey conducted by HBR 64% of employers agreed that the need for continuous lifelong learning will demand higher levels of education and more credentials. In essence, this has prompted a boom in post-under-graduate learning as there is an increased demand of skills in the knowledge economy.

Organizations are aware that professional education can be earned online from an array of the top universities from around the world, but are cognizant that the programs vary significantly. As employers are the key evaluators of value, there is a general understanding that they will come together around clarity and standards.

To this end, the responsiveness of business leaders to new educational credential offerings and delivery methods will be crucial in outlining the future form of the market.

Nova Scotia - Physians - 15Sep19 - unspash -free pic.jpg

This stream assists Nova Scotia’s public health authorities (NSHA) and the Isaak Walton Killam (IWK) Health Centre to hire general practitioners, family physicians, and specialist physicians to work in Nova Scotia. The stream helps the NSHA and IWK to recruit and retain physicians with the required skills for positions that they have not been able to fill with a permanent resident or Canadian citizen.

It is only open to general practitioners and family physicians (NOC 3112) and specialist physicians (NOC 3111) with signed approved opportunities with NSHA or IWK Health Centre. The physician needs to pledge to live and work in Nova Scotia for at least of two years to be eligible for selection through this new stream.

The approved opportunity must be on official NSHA letterhead and must:

• Be signed and dated by a person authorized to hire physicians

• Be signed and dated by the applicant who is accepting the opportunity

• Indicate eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of NS

• Indicate that the applicant is eligible to apply for privileges and credentials with NSHA

Eligible physicians selected by the NSNP will receive a Letter of Interest (LOI) through the Express Entry system and have 30 days to apply for a provincial nomination from Nova Scotia.

Toronto immigration firm charges $170K for fake Canadian job

A Toronto based immigration firm offered a job to an undercover CBC journalist who posed as a Chinese national looking for permanent residence in Canada for $170,000.

Canadian diplomatic missions from around the world were questioned about the integrity of these job offers and they identified prevalent inherent difficulties.

• Hong Kong reported "high rates of fraud or suspected fraud and only 15-22 per cent of AE offers were found to be genuine."

• Beijing said that "21 of the 33 files chosen for review found the applicants were not working for the employer or had never worked for the employer."

• New Delhi found that "over 60 per cent of the cases never worked for the employers in Canada."

• Seoul said "that out of 29 cases landed in 2008, only eight appeared bona fide, 12 cases found collusion between the employer and/or applicant and/or agent."

The federal government did not provide recent numbers when asked. Shannon Ker, a spokesperson for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) wrote that "the vast majority of applications received by IRCC are genuine." Adding, IRCC has trained its employees "how to detect fraud and the appropriate steps to take when there is sufficient cause to suspect it is taking place."

Kurland said that, in his view, Ottawa and provincial regulators aren't doing enough. However, "there is an actual anxiety that the province and the feds have insufficient enforcement resources to keep things honest, and a lack of enforcement is an invitation for abuse”.

After you’ve checked to make sure you’re working with an authorized legal services provider, Immigration Consultant (RCIC) or a lawyer, it’s always a good idea to make sure you understand their process, timeline, and fee structure before getting started.
